Project Description

The goal of this project was to design a reaction stand that sealed and secured a reaction chamber and mixer assembly. The reaction stand included specialty ports for addition, probing, and condensate collection. The reaction stand also contained a custom surface condenser and a shield to protect from a potential explosion.

Mechanical Design

Designed a structure to create the environment for all proceeding parts to assemble

Designed a plate that would securely mount and seal the reaction chamber

Designed and optimized the locations of the specialty ports in the mounting plate

Designed a system for addition ports that would allow material to be added to the reaction chamber without breaking the vacuum seal

Designed a surface condenser to be operated in line with a vacuum line

Designed a system to heat the platen and control the temperature to a specified range

Designed a shield to protect from potential explosions.

Customized instrumentation and control using Swagelok parts

Electrical Design

Integrated platen heater and thermocouple with existing temperature controller

Machining

Fabricated mounting plate and structure, surface condenser, blast shield, and guide for reaction chamber

Final Product Assembly

Assembled all mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical parts

System Validation
